COMMANDERS NOTE: This is a sad month at Post #17; we lost our longtime Finance Officer, Dick Cearfoss. Dick did a wonderful job as Finance Officer and was a true friend to everyone, and there wasn’t anything that Dick would not volunteer to help with and we are truly going to miss him. On a brighter note, we would like to thank the Auxiliary, Son’s, Rider’s, and Pool League for their donations towards the roof repair and new ice machine. We are looking for a new Finance Officer, so if anyone that is a Regular Member would like to help out, please contact me. And as Always, if you have any questions or suggestions, please contact me at (419) 370-6042. Allen Kidd – Your Commander

From the Service Officer: We wish to advise Afghanistan Veterans, and the next of kin of those killed in action that they are eligible for the Ohio Veterans Bonus. The bonus for Persian Gulf and Iraq vets ended Dec. 31, 2014. The bonus is not subject to federal or state taxes, and is available to veterans who served more than 90 days active duty, not for training during the following period. For Afghanistan, from Oct. 7, 2001 through a date to be determined by the President, and payment can be received for active duty service anywhere in the world during these periods, but is higher for veterans who served in Afghanistan. Combat medically discharged vets from this era should also apply. Eligible veterans must have been Ohio residents at the time of their entry into the service, and must be Ohio residents currently. The bonus pay is $100.00 a month to veterans who served in Afghanistan, up to a maximum of $1,000.00. For veterans who served elsewhere, the payment is $50.00 a month up to a $500.00 maximum. Veterans medical discharged due to injuries sustained in combat can receive $1000.00 plus up to $500.00 for months of service elsewhere. Family members of those killed in action or who died from disease as a result of their in-theater service can receive a bonus of $5,000.00 plus whatever the service member was eligible for, up to a total of $6,500.00. To apply or for more information, call toll free (877) 644-6838 or go to www.veteransbonus.ohio.gov or visit any County veterans service office.
There is also another benefit called Military Injury Relief Fund. It was formally run by Job and Family Services and as of July 1, 2015, it is now run by the Ohio Department of Veteran Services. Veterans that were injured as of Oct. 7, 2001 to the present can apply. To apply or for more information you can call toll free (877) 644-6838 or go to www.ohiovets.gov/mire
